Among the large planets within the solar system, Neptune is the most dense. Neptune is seventeen times the mass of Earth and is slightly more large than its near-twin Uranus, which is fifteen times the mass of Earth and slightly larger than Neptune. Neptune orbits the Sun once each 164.8 years at a mean distance of 30.1 astronomical units (4.50×109 km). Named after the Roman god of the ocean, its astronomical image is ♆, a stylized version of the god Neptune’s spear.
Neptune isn’t visible to the unaided eye and is the solely planet within the solar system found by mathematical prediction instead of by empirical observation. sudden changes within the orbit of Uranus led Alexis Bouvard to deduce that its orbit was subject to attractive force perturbation by an unknown planet. Neptune was afterwards discovered with a telescope on 23 September 1846 by Johann Galle inside a degree of the position foretold by Urbain le Verrier. Its largest moon, Triton, was discovered shortly thenceforth, although none of the planet’s remaining well-known fourteen moons were placed telescopically till the twentieth century.
